SKU: 18033 Category:

Together with David Bier, SeilNorge is offering a special tailor-made trip for adventurous Shomer Shabbat people of all ages who want to explore the beauty of Norway in an unconventional way

A Rare Winter Wonderland

Every winter, massive shoals of herring gather along the North Norwegian coast — and with them come the giants of the sea. Orca whales follow the feast, creating an extraordinary, wild spectacle in the fjords. We invite you to join us in the middle of it all, on an unforgettable kosher sailing adventure, surrounded by whales, silence, and snow — in the company of fellow Orthodox Jewish travelers.

This journey takes place during the magical Arctic light season. While some call this the dark time of year, it’s when the most beautiful light appears – endless golden hours and glowing snow-covered peaks by day, and northern lights dancing across the sky at night. With no light pollution on the boat, we’ll experience the wonders of G-d’s creations and a deep sense of spiritual connection.

Sailing experience is welcome but certainly not required — you’ll learn everything you need to know on board. This is more than a trip; it’s a hands-on journey through Norway’s wildest season — physically adventurous, spiritually uplifting, and entirely kosher.

Tromsø

Tromsø, known as the gateway to the Arctic, is a stunning city and region in Northern Norway, surrounded by dramatic fjords, snow-covered mountains, and the deep blue sea. Located above the Arctic Circle, it’s one of the best places to experience the Northern Lights and observe orca whales in the wild. The area is rich in culture and Arctic history, with warm, welcoming locals who live closely with nature. Its raw beauty and peaceful atmosphere make it the perfect setting for a truly unique sailing adventure.

Activity Overview
Orca/whales

Every November, Northern Norway becomes one of the best places in the world to see orcas in the wild. These incredible marine mammals are actually the largest members of the dolphin family. Intelligent, social, and powerful, orcas travel in pods and communicate with each other through complex sounds. With years of experience, our skippers know where these big animals are most likely to be encountered. Sailing through these waters lets you observe orcas up close in their natural habitat—a magical and humbling experience you’ll never forget.

Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are a natural light display that occurs when solar particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, creating glowing waves of green, pink, and purple across the sky. Northern Norway is one of the best places in the world to see them—especially in November, then the nights are long and dark, and the skies are often clear. Watching the northern lights dance above the snow-covered fjords and open sea is a truly magical experience and one of nature’s greatest shows. With solar activity at its highest point in many decades, seeing the northern lights on our trip
is almost guaranteed.

Cold plunge / Arctic swim (if you dare!)

Swimming in the icy waters of Northern Norway in November is an unforgettable experience. The cold shocks your body awake, clears your mind, and fills you with energy. Surrounded by snowy mountains and crisp Arctic air, it’s a moment of pure clarity and connection with nature—refreshing, intense, and deeply alive.

Why sailing?

The region’s fjords, islands and sea make it an incredible place to explore by boat. Sailing is more than just travel—it is a feeling of freedom. Gliding through the water with the wind in your sails, you become part of the rhythm of nature. It’s peaceful, yet full of adventure, offering moments of teamwork, quiet reflection, and connection to the sea. Whether you are steering the boat or simply watching the horizon, sailing awakens a sense of calm and wonder that stays with you long after the journey ends.

What are we busy with on board?

Each guest is part of the crew, regardless of sailing experience. You do not need to be able to sail to participate, but you will learn a lot about sailing along the way. Our skilled skipper will take care of the sail training and navigation on board, including local knowledge of the area and life in the sea. We  take turns learning how to stand at the helm, hoist sails, read navigational charts, and help dock in small harbors or anchorages. You get the opportunity to participate in all tasks on board – cook, navigate, take a morning swim, gut fish, serve anchor dram, tie knots – the complete sailing experience! The
hands-on atmosphere brings people together and adds a sense of teamwork and rhythm to the journey. On board, the atmosphere is cozy, inclusive, and down-to-earth. The November days are short, so we often gather around warm meals, sip hot drinks, and share stories. There’s a natural balance  between activity and stillness, sometimes just enjoying the scenery drifting by or reading a good book. After dinner, we try to catch the northern lights dancing across the sky.

Awesome experience with the whales swimming up to the sailboat to check us out. Fantastic displays of Northern lights as well as all the varieties of sailing: fair winds, storm, snow, hail and fog. All taken with good cheer in good company!

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and sail towards Kvalsundet

Welcome on board! We meet at the dock in Tromsø at 4.00 p.m. You’ll get to know the crew from SeilNorge and talk about the adventure to come. We’ll check into the sailboat and get to know each other. Before we hoist sails, we familiarize ourselves with the boat and go through safety routines. We check the latest weather forecast and look at the route for the week before we set off towards Kvaløya and Kvalsundet. Along the way, we practice handling the boat and other emergency situations.

Day 2: Sailing day to Rebbenesøy and Vannøya

We wake up on our first morning of adventure, who takes the first morning swim? After breakfast, we sail further around Ringvassøy in the beautiful archipelago here at the entrance to the open sea. With everyone keeping an open eye on the sea we might meet our big friends on our way to the most popular whaling spots. We pass, among other things, Gåsvær, which may be worth a trip on land. For the evening we find a suitable anchorage or harbor, maybe on Rebbenesøy or Vannøya while we enjoy the scenery and possible northern lights en route to tonight’s harbor. Possibly we also get some fish on
the hook for dinner?

Day 3: Looking for the herring and the whale

Large shoals of herring enter the fjords in North Tromso every winter, and it is these shoals that attract humpbacks and orcas. By following the flocks of seagulls and observing other boats in the area we can choose an animal- friendly way to get close to the whales without causing unnecessary disturbance. This way our observation of the whales will have a minimal impact on these friendly giants.

With many days at our disposal we have time to look in different places for both herring and whales. So hopefully we will get some good moments with these majestic animals to ourselves. We sail on past Vannøya and Arnøya and finally end up around Nord Lenangen and Lyngen peninsula for the night.

Day 4: Kvænangen and Spildra

At this time of year, there aren’t too many hours of daylight in the north, so we make sure to be there with the whales when the light is at its strongest. Maybe you didn’t think it was possible to sail through the Alps? Today we get to disprove that with a sail through the fierce Lyngen Alps while keeping a keen eye for more whales and other marine life. The Lyngen Alps are one of Norway’s most dramatic and breathtaking mountain ranges, soaring straight up from the fjords of Northern Norway. Towering, jagged peaks rise over 1800 meters above sea level, often snow-covered year-round, and cascading down into crystal-clear arctic waters.

This rugged peninsula is shaped by glaciers and steep valleys. The landscape is wild and raw – home to dramatic ridgelines, ice-blue glaciers, deep fjords, and untouched wilderness. With plenty of time on our hands we’ll seek out the best opportunities for getting close to the whales. While we watch for the tell-tale sign of birds flocking, it will be difficult not to be impressed by the mountains and beauty in the Arctic. Tonight we’ll dock in Nord Lenangen for a peaceful night.

Day 5: Whale watching and sailing to harbor for the Shabbat

To observe the Shabbat that comes in at 1:17 p.m., we use this day to make our way to a safe harbor where we will be for the duration of Shabbat. We’ll dock in Tromsø or another suitable area in good time before the Shabbat begins.

Depending on where we spent the night, the skippers might start heading to port early this morning. With a little luck we might see more
animals on our way to port. The entire group will spend an uplifting Shabbat together, in a special atmosphere with tefilot and Shabbat meals. Our chef is a Shabbos herring expert and will prepare a variety of heimishe specialties for Shabbat, all from fresh fish. There’s time to talk, read, learn and play board games.

Day 6: Shabbat - and the magical winter light

Our Shabbat atmosphere continues, with Shabbat ending at the early hour of 3:39 p.m. After havdalah, Shabbat has ended and we can hoist the sails for the next part of our journey. Maybe we’ll find a good place for a bonfire and socializing on land with a small hike?

The northern Norwegians say that the best thing about the dark season is the light. Although you don’t see the sun that much here in the north these months, the light that comes through is quite special. Perfect for exploring and experimenting with the camera, with the majestic landscape as a self-written motif.

Day 7: Bye for now in Tromsø

Today we set sail for the last leg of our trip. We circle the whole Lyngen peninsula with its mighty alpine peaks before getting back to Tromsø at 4:00 p.m., high on the adrenaline of our experience, we say our goodbyes at 4:00 p.m. to the people with whom we’ve created lasting memories.

Thanks for an unforgettable adventure!
