Meet Your Guide – Tanja Matschi
My love for the outdoors started long before I became a guide. Growing up in the Alps, I spent countless days in the mountains and eventually turned that passion into a profession. Today, I work as an International Mountain Leader and Expedition Guide, leading trips in places such as Svalbard, Greenland, Antarctica and Northern Norway.

The polar regions have become some of my favorite places on Earth. I am fascinated by their wildlife, vast landscapes and ever-changing light. Over the years, I have had the privilege of observing whales in different parts of the Arctic and Antarctica, and every encounter still feels special. Whether it is a curious humpback whale surfacing next to the boat or a pod of orcas traveling silently through a fjord, these are moments that never lose their magic.
Photography is another passion of mine and an important part of how I experience these places. I always enjoy helping guests improve their photography, whether they bring a professional camera or simply want to take better photos with their phone.
For me, whale watching is about much more than ticking animals off a list. It is about spending time with these animals on their terms, understanding their behavior and appreciating the privilege of sharing their environment. I look forward to welcoming you on board and sharing this incredible corner of the Arctic with you.
About the Expedition
Northern Norway offers some of the most spectacular wildlife encounters in the Arctic. Every winter, large schools of herring gather in the fjords, attracting humpback whales and orcas. Combined with snow-covered mountains, dramatic Arctic light and the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights, it creates an unforgettable environment for exploration.
Travelling by sailing yacht allows us to experience this landscape at a slower pace. Rather than following a fixed route, we adapt our plans to weather conditions, wildlife activity and the opportunities each day presents. Some days may be spent searching for whales, others sailing through remote fjords, enjoying life on board or waiting for the Aurora Borealis to appear above the mountains.’
This expedition is designed for travellers who enjoy nature, wildlife, photography and life at sea. No sailing experience is required. Whether you are an experienced photographer, a wildlife enthusiast or simply curious about the Arctic, you are welcome to join us on this adventure.

Why Travel by Sailing Yacht?
Travelling by sailing yacht offers a completely different perspective on Northern Norway. Instead of returning to a hotel every evening, our yacht becomes our home as we explore remote fjords and anchorages.
Life on board is simple, authentic and deeply connected to the natural environment around us. We wake up surrounded by Arctic mountains, share meals together, take part in sailing the yacht and experience the ever-changing conditions of the North as a team.
No previous sailing experience is required. Whether you would like to actively participate or simply enjoy the journey from the deck, you are welcome to become part of the crew.
Who Is This Trip For?
This expedition is designed for travellers who enjoy wildlife, nature, photography and authentic experiences in remote environments.
You do not need any previous sailing experience, and no specialist photography equipment is required. A good general level of fitness and a willingness to embrace the flexibility of expedition travel are all that is needed.
Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, photographer, sailor or simply curious about the Arctic, this journey offers a unique opportunity to experience Northern Norway at its most magical time of year.
Board language: German and English
Awesome experience with the whales swimming up to the sailboat to check us out. Fantastic displays of Northern lights as well as all the varieties of sailing: fair winds, storm, snow, hail and fog. All taken with good cheer in good company!

Itinerary
Day 1 – Welcome on Board in Tromsø
Your Arctic adventure begins in Tromsø, the gateway to the Arctic. We meet at the marina in the afternoon, settle into our cabins and get to know our fellow crew members. After a safety briefing and introduction to life on board, we cast off and begin our journey north. Depending on weather and sea conditions, we may already enjoy our first evening sail through the fjords of Northern Norway.
Day 2 – Towards the Whales
After breakfast, we continue north towards the areas where herring gather during the winter months. These vast schools of fish attract humpback whales and orcas, making Northern Norway one of the best places in the world to observe these animals in the wild. We spend the day sailing through spectacular Arctic scenery while keeping watch for our first whale encounters. As darkness falls, we keep our eyes on the sky for a possible appearance of the Northern Lights.
Day 3 – Searching for Orcas and Humpback Whales
Today is dedicated to exploring the whale areas around Skjervøy, Kvænangen and Northern Troms. The exact route depends on weather conditions, sea state and the latest whale activity. Travelling by sailing yacht allows us to remain flexible and adapt to the conditions. With a bit of luck, we may spend hours observing feeding humpbacks, travelling orcas and the rich birdlife that accompanies them.
Day 4 – Following the Herring
The whales follow the herring, and so do we. We continue exploring the fjords and channels of Northern Norway in search of wildlife encounters. Between whale sightings, there is time to learn more about the Arctic ecosystem, enjoy the winter landscape and simply experience life at sea. Depending on conditions and opportunities, we may visit a small coastal community, enjoy a short walk ashore or relax in a local sauna.
Day 5 – Arctic Winter Light and Wildlife
One of the highlights of travelling in Northern Norway at this time of year is the incredible Arctic light. The low sun creates long sunrises and sunsets, bathing the mountains and fjords in soft colours. This is a wonderful day for photography, wildlife observation and simply enjoying the beauty of the Arctic. We continue our search for whales while exploring new anchorages and remote corners of the fjord system.
Day 6 – Sailing Through the Arctic
Our final full day is all about embracing the Arctic sailing experience. Depending on weather and conditions, we may enjoy longer passages under sail, search for one last whale encounter or explore a remote anchorage before turning south towards Tromsø. In the evening, we celebrate a memorable week together on board and reflect on the adventures we have shared.
Day 7 – Farewell in Tromsø
After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye. We clean and pack up before leaving the yacht in Tromsø. While the expedition comes to an end, we hope you leave with unforgettable memories of whales, Northern Lights, Arctic landscapes and life under sail in one of the most spectacular regions of the world.
A Flexible Arctic Expedition
This itinerary should be seen as a framework rather than a fixed schedule. Weather conditions, wildlife activity and local circumstances will determine our exact route. Our priority is always to create the best possible experience while travelling safely and responsibly. Flexibility is part of every great Arctic adventure.

Safety and risk on board
We are all about people, and so we also take safety very seriously. On our trips we practice sail- and boat handling also for safety, and we spend time going through various situations that can arise at sea, how to handle them and how to avoid them.
On board a boat everyone must know what to do in critical situations and in the event of an emergency. Our philosophy is that partaking and participation builds safety. It is important for the safety of the whole boat that you are a participant on board, not just a passenger.
Therefore all our trips are to be considered sailing courses in addition to being great holidays and adventures: You are trained to make up the crew on board and so we build a capable team on board.
Feel free to contact us for a chat about safety and risk on our adventures.
Level of the trip
No sailing experience? No problem! Our sailing adventures welcome both novices and seasoned sailors for an inclusive and enjoyable experience. Whether you’re new to sailing or a salty sea dog, our trips cater to all levels.
We aim to transform beginners into sailors quickly while offering experienced participants greater responsibilities and challenges. Our mainland sailing journeys involve 44-50 feet boats navigating coastal and protected waters, occasionally crossing open stretches for excitement. Route adjustments based on weather and conditions ensure a safe and adaptable voyage.
Our trips aren’t overly strenuous – we rotate positions and tasks, so everyone gets a mix of hands-on sailing and time to relax. Staying active helps prevent seasickness, and if it strikes, it usually passes quickly. Weather up north is unpredictable, one moment it’s smooth sailing and the next the wind picks up, and you’re in the middle of a proper Arctic adventure. Be ready for anything from calm winds to rough weather – because that’s what makes the journey unforgettable!
What we expect from you
Our trips require a little effort from you who are joining – everyone on board must be ready to contribute and to give of themselves also socially; the more you open up, share and interest yourself in the others on board, the more enjoyable it gets.Â
When you’re sailing with us you will be taking part in the running of the ship and all that comes with it.
You will be sailing, docking, navigating, looking out for whales and icebergs, but also making food, serving others, doing dishes and helping clean the boat during the trip, and contributing in other ways when needed. On board we are all in the same boat and when all help out, the ship is most happy.
Our experience is that doing things together is what creates the best and most memorable moments and stories:)
Equipment and packing
As with all activities, there is plenty of special equipment and clothing for sailing. If you don’t have any of this, you will get very far with normal hiking/outdoor equipment. You do not need to buy a lot of new equipment to join our trips. Use what you have, borrow what you need from a friend, purchase used equipment, and if you have to invest in new equipment – buy quality items that will last! What you need is something waterproof and windproof on the outside, and layered warm clothing underneath.
Some jackets may not be waterproof “enough”, or might not perform too well in salt water, so you can consider a set of oilskin for the wettest days (available for rent or purchase on board). A pair of higher rubber boots for disembarking from the dinghy is very good to have, as well as indoor shoes below deck. Out at sea and in the Arctic it can be cold even in summer, so bring both swimwear and plenty of warm clothes. Well before departure, we will send you a detailed recommended packing list.
Read more and see our packing tips here:
PS: In a sailboat, you pack in a bag or sack, not in a rigid suitcase. 🙂
Food & cooking on board
On our trips, you will be part of the crew on board and get the chance to participate in all tasks for the operation of the boat. This includes cooking and preparing food – everyone take turns in the galley! Skippers and crew assist as much as they can along the way.
We have great menus with tasty, healthy and “boat-friendly” food, and for each trip we order provisions for all meals on board. If you have allergies or preferences, let us know in the registration form and we will take that into account as best as we can. You are also most welcome to bring any special food or drink with you. Why not bring some specialities from your country or region for the boat to enjoy?Â
During a weeklong trip we often sail by a good restaurant or two where we can have dinner on land. Some places we need to pre-book and we will then need to choose a menu before we arrive. More about all of this when you come on board!
Life on board & accommodation
Life on a sailboat is super social and fun, but it might feel a bit intimate at first. No worries though, that vibe usually fades after the first hour. Everyone chips in to run the boat, and we’re all part of the crew, which means quick bonding.
We’re keen to get to know you and hope you’ll connect with the rest of the crew. It takes some patience, generosity, and an open mind to thrive, but soon you’ll be focused on making new friends and enjoying raw nature experiences once sea life feels like home.
Sleeping arrangements in shared cabins with double or bunk beds can be a bit of a puzzle, but we’re pretty good at figuring it out. Let us know if you have preferences. You’re on your own for land accommodations before or after the trip.
The boat provides heating and good food, but fresh water isn’t always abundant. Water conservation means not showering every day, but when near freshwater sources, we make the most of it. But nothing beats a morning sea swim for that fresh feeling.
