Palander is a one-off Farr 40′ built by a passionate sailor and boat builder at the Finnish Nauticat shipyard.

The boat is light, but built very solid with an epoxy hull. It oozes proper craftsmanship with high class equipment, and stainless steel fittings for all internal handles and bunk suspensions.

The boat is characterized by a high mast, lots of sails and lots of lines in the cockpit.

The boat also has a 2,4 meter deep lead keel as a righting moment for the 18,5 meter high aluminum mast; in its time handmade by Sparcraft in France.

General information

After a period as the shipyard’s show-off boat, they built a touring interior in the boat, complete with a galley and bathroom. Palander is probably one of very few Farr 40s with mahogany interior and salon windows. With a heating system as large as many larger boats, but with half the interior volume, Palander is also the warmest inside when firing up the diesel heater.

Palander is a fantastic sailboat where sailing is the focus. There are no cabins, but an open social layout with a total of 10 single berths/sleeping spaces. So, on trips with Palander, we don’t offer the comfort package with bedding and duvets/pillows; it’s modest, and everyone needs to bring their own sleeping bag.

Palander fits right into the philosophy of the Swedish boat builder and sailor Sven Yrvind, who says, “most people misunderstand life. Comfort does not make you happy. On the contrary, it makes you lazy, fat, and bored.”

Sven Yrvind is a tough guy over 80 years old, now on his third circumnavigation with a small boat, this time with a 9-foot boat. Read more about Sven Yrvind here.

We have had enormous joy with Palander all year since we bought her in June 2010, both in winter at Ski and Sail, on summer trips, and during sailing courses.

The boat is well-maintained, with, among other things, new sails in 2015, an overhauled engine in 2016, a new ROD rig in 2018, and an upgrade in 2019/20, including interior refurbishment and new instruments.
